St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was a luminary in the history of Kerala in the 19th century. He was a pioneer in the educational and religious movements of his time. He founded the first indigenous religious community, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), at Mannanam in 1831 with the help of his venerable gurus Fr. Thomas Palackal and Fr. Thomas Porookara. He founded the first indigenous Sanskrit School for the poor at Mannanam in 1846. He was the visionary who, in his capacity as Vicar General of the Syro Malabar Church, sent out an edict to all parish churches that every church should have a school attached to it.
We, the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, after the example of our founder, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, consider education as the integral formation of the human person for the fulfilment of his/her individual and social responsibilities. Our educational endeavours are aimed at forming leaders who are intellectually competent, spiritually mature, morally upright, psychologically integrated, physically healthy and socially acceptable, who will champion the cause of justice, love, truth and peace and who are ever open to further growth.
